Clark Atlanta University, Harkness Hall: Atlanta, Georgia

Clark Atlanta University is a consolidation of Atlanta University, founded in 1865 and Clark College, founded in 1869. Clark Atlanta embraces its long history of educating a predominantly African-American student body and celebrating the community’s rich heritage. One of the most recognizable buildings on the Clark Atlanta University campus, Harkness Hall holds special meaning for Atlanta and the entire country’s role in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. On the steps of this magnificent brick building, the eulogy for Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. was delivered. When the Doric columns spanning the length of Harkness Hall began to rot at both ends, Hogan was called to aid in the process to rehabilitate this important landmark, delicately restoring the columns and ensuring the preservation of the building’s exterior. Hogan also performed a rehabilitation of select wood windows and reconstructed the finishes to historic standards in terms of the columns and cornices. The project included a structural rehabilitation and lead paint removal and abatement.
